Welcome to Meadowslea Angus

Breeding Bulls for South Island Hill and High Country conditions

Meadowslea Angus Stud was established in 1985 with the purchase of Capital Stock Females from Turihaua Station Gisborne.

The herd today comprises over 300 cows run on tussock country west of Fairlie at an altitude of 1500 to 3000 feet. The cows are run entirely under commercial conditions with heifers calving as 2 year olds. Strong emphasis is placed on cow fertility and ease of calving, resulting in no cows or heifers needing assistance at calving for the last 7 years.

Selection criteria are for easy fleshing moderate framed cattle with plenty of meat and adequate fat cover, that will shift and perform in the South Island hill country. Sires used are all NZ bred, with real emphasis placed on structural soundness, mobility, longevity and fat cover. Over the last four years our Stud Cows have also grazed on our neighbours property "Berkley Downs" on their native tussock blocks. This has further tested their hardiness and constitution.

Sale Bulls are entirely grass fed, with Kale and silage to finish them prior to sale. No grain or protein supplements.

Breeding Policy

Our objectives are to breed bulls for the South Island hill and high country conditions.

We run our stud cows as close to a commercial operation as possible with cows working hard on the tussock and any showing the slightest weakness in constitution or structural soundness culled.

All yearling heifers have the opportunity of the bull and anything not in calf is culled. Only after proving they can raise a good calf and stay in good order on the tussock are the 2 ½ year old heifers selected for the herd.

We believe good fat cover is essential for cattle to survive and thrive in the harder South Island hill and high country areas where we and the majority of our bull clients farm.
